How to Pick a Good Eyeliner

One thing that never seems to go out of style is a good eyeliner.  There are a lot of choices out there, so we thought we'd give you an overview of the different types and some of the pros and cons of each type.

There are three main formulations of eyeliner-liquid, gel/creme based and pencil eyeliners.  Each convey different looks, so the question to consider is the look you want to achieve.

Liquid

The look: for precise, clean crisp lines

Advantages:

-lasts a long time, once set doesn't really bleed

-dries quickly (so make sure you blend and do what you need to before it dries)

Disadvantages:

-can be a little more difficult to use, so practice makes perfect

TIP:Most makeup artists agree, it's best to use a pointed sponge to apply than the brushes they  come with, the pointed sponge is a little easier to handle

Our top pick: Dior Liquid Liner($30.00)

easy to use with intense color, it's liquid liners made easy.  Our second pick?  Lancome Laque Liner

($25.00), a new product from Lancome, it's brush makes precise lines and give a rich finish.  Too much? Then go for Urban Decay's Liquid Liner ($18.00)

like everything Urban, it makes a statement and easy to use!

Gel/Creme Eyeliners:

The look: provides both precise thin and softer thicker lines

Advantages:

-more smooth than a pencil, not as smooth as liquid liner

-easy to smear/remove

-stays on a long time

Disadvantage:

-can take a little practice to use, but not as difficult as a liquid liner

TIP:best to use a stiff angled brush for application, it makes it a little easier to control

Our top pick:MAC's Fluidline Gel ($15.00 US/$18.00CDN)

Economic but high quality, these gels go on creamy and gives an intense finish.  Try using with their Precise Eyeliner Brush ($17.00/$CDN), and you'll be drawing in no time.

Pencil:

The look:softer more romantic lines

Advantages:

-easier to use

-can be easily wiped off if you make mistakes

Disadvantage:

-smudges/wears away more

TIP:warm your pencil in your hand a few minutes before use, it helps it to go on smoothly

Our top pick:Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide On Pencils ($16.00)

are hands down our favorite. Smooth and so easy to use, these pencils just ooze color and practically draw themselves.  If you haven't tried them, do yourself a favor and get one now!

GENERAL TIPS

Big eyes can apply eyeliner to lower lids, smaller should avoid (it will make your eyes look smaller)

Small eyes should avoid thick lines (it makes your eyes look even smaller)

Follow the natural curve of your lash line (especially with liquid liner) and avoid using liquid liner on lower lashes, use a pencil instead

Colors that tend to suit everyone-Brown, black and violet
