Winter Hair Care Tips
Winter is one of those seasons we have a love/hate relationship with-we love the snow and the new makeup lines, but we hate the cold and what it does to our skin and hair. We've given you some tips on what to look for in your winter moisturizer, but what can you do for your hair?
Here are some simple tips to help your hair survive this dry, cold winter season.
Wear a hat. Not only will these help keep you warm but it protects your hair from the elements. If your not a hat person, at least try a scarf wrapped around your head, anything to protect your hair from the wind and cold is worth it.
Avoid too much heat. This means limit the blow drying, curling, straightening, and let your hair go natural every once in a while. If you really must style, at least use a heat activated conditioner beforehand to help counteract the drying effects of your styling or set your hair dryer to a cool setting.
Wash your hair with lukewarm water. As tempting as it is to have a hot shower to warm you up, it's not the best thing to do for your hair or skin. Try washing with warm (not hot) water, even cold water if you can tolerate it. The heat can damage and cause split ends. If the thought of a cold wash is too much for you, at least try rinsing off with cold water to help lock and seal your hair follicles and prevent damage.
Don't shampoo as often. Try cutting back on your normal hair care regiment, if you shampoo/condition every day, then try every other day, if it's 4 times a week, then try 3 times etc. Washing can dry your scalp out, so by skipping a few times, it gives your scalp to moisturize and regenerate.
Try a leave in treatment. There are some great leave in conditioners and treatments out there. Spoil yourself every once in a while and give your hair a treat. Believe me, your hair will look fantastic afters. Our favorite hair products are from Shu Uemura's Art of Hair. Try their Moisture Velvet Line for Dry Hair, it's infused with camellia oil to nourish and soften your hair. The Moisture Velvet Nourishing Treatment ($60 US/$ CDN)is perfect to rejuvenate your winter damaged hair. If this is too much, try Frederic Fekkai Hair Mask with Shea Butter ($22.50) or Redken All Soft Masque with avocado oil ($11.00).
Make sure your hair is dry before you leave the house. Never expose wet or even damp hair to the winter elements. Your hair can freeze and then easily break, leaving you with damaged, unhealthy broken hair. This is another instance where a deep conditioning or treatment once a week can really help bring your hair back to life.
Try some hairspray on your comb. This will help tame your flyaways. Anything that will add weight will help conquer this annoying winter hair mishap that happens to just about everyone. If you're not a hairspray person, then try some baby powder or even a tiny amount of moisturizer to help weigh down those naughty flyaways.
